Learn to Skate
“Skate with U.S.”
Ice skating is a great way to stay physically fit and have fun. The Novi Ice Arena Learn to Skate Program is a great place to start for any aspiring hockey player or figure skater. The schedule includes classes for all skill levels ages 3 through Adult.
The Learn to Skate program follows the curriculum of the U.S. Figure Skating program. Lessons are given by highly qualified professional skating instructors. Please direct all questions to Skating Director Micki Freier at (248) 347-1010 or email mfreier@suburbanice.com.

PROGRAM DETAILS
- First day of class

Skaters should arrive 15 minutes early. Skaters should dress warmly, but allow for freedom of movement. Mittens or gloves and long pants should also be worn. Young skaters should wear a helmet or a hat.
- Name Tags
All skaters will have a name tag with their name, class level and teacher’s name. Name tags also indicate if skate rental is pre-paid. Name tags are located downstairs next to the elevator. Instructors will collect name tags at the end of each class. Class levels will be posted on the lobby wall downstairs. For the first class, students will meet their instructors next to their posted level. The second class and remaining classes the students will meet their instructors on the ice.
- Instruction / Practice
All classes are 30 minutes with 30 minutes of practice offered either before or after class depending on the class the skater is enrolled in. This is for Learn to Skate participants only. Parents and/or siblings are not allowed on the ice. No games or fast skating is permitted.
- Class Advancement
It is not unusual for skaters to repeat a class two or more times. Skaters are allowed to develop at their own pace. Skills taught build upon each other, and to move a skater up before they master a skill only makes skating more difficult. Skaters will be evaluated each session to determine progress.
- 2009 Ice Show - New York! New York!
Skaters from the Learn to Skate program are encouraged to participate in the yearly ice show held in late April. This show allows skaters to have fun, learn a group routing, wear a wonderful costume and best of all show off their skating accomplishments. This show is sponsored by the Skating Club of Novi. Registration for the show begins in mid-October.
- Free Public Skating
All Learn to Skate participants are given a punch card to come and practice at Novi Ice Arena's public skating sessions. The punch card will be good for one free public skate session for each week of the Learn to Skate program. For example, if a student is signed up for a seven-week Learn to Skate program, he/she will receive a punch card for seven free public skate sessions. The student must have their card punched before going on the ice. There will be absolutely no free admittance without the punch card. The offer does not include the skate rental fee.
